The university honoured scientists in the media
cientists who not only promote their own research but also enhance the reputation of Palacký University through media engagement were recognized at a special event titled “In the Spotlight”, held at the university’s Fort Science. The event also acknowledged the invaluable support of researchers’ family members. Representatives from all faculties, including CATRIN, took the stage.
The Vice-Rector for Communication and Student Affairs Andrea Hanáčková and the Vice-Rector for Science and Research Lucie Plíhalová personally thanked the awardees and presented them with a small token of appreciation. The event highlighted how science communication bridges research and public engagement, making scientific discoveries more visible.
“Despite the challenges of popularizing science, all the awardees—and many other academics at our university—excel in this discipline. Through their efforts, they not only share their research but also uphold the university’s reputation and promote science as a whole,” said the Vice-Rector Andrea Hanáčková, emphasizing the vital role of science communication in academia.
Petr Tarkowski from CATRIN welcomed the initiative, saying, “It was a pleasant gathering. I truly appreciate the university formally recognizing scientists who engage with the public, and I liked the way the event was organized.”
The setting of Fort Science added to the significance of the occasion. “It was an honour to celebrate academics from UP who actively engage with the public and media in a venue dedicated to science communication. Our mission is the same—to convey the importance of science, education, and the university to the general public while strengthening its third role,” said Matěj Dostálek, director of Fort Science and the event’s host. He also expressed joy in seeing scientists bring their families to explore an open, friendly, and accessible environment.
To make the evening even more special for the three dozen children in attendance, the organizers premiered a brand-new science show, “About Energy”, prepared by lecturers from Fort Science.
