A new research group to support measurement and data management for scientists

A new research group, Synthesis and Characterization of Advanced Materials, has been operating at CATRIN since January. The new group is led by physical chemist Petr Jakubec, who, in this interview, outlines the team’s tasks and his vision for its leadership.

What is the role of the new research group?
Our primary mission is to support colleagues from other research groups. Each team member will be responsible for tasks ranging from conducting specific measurements to managing and maintaining scientific equipment. For researchers within CATRIN-RCPTM, we will primarily perform measurements, provide detailed reports, and ensure proper data storage and management.

Additionally, we will focus on synthesizing and preparing new materials based on researchers’ specifications. Another key area is technology transfer and collaboration with commercial partners. We will handle commercial projects and actively seek partnerships for contract research in cooperation with our Technology Transfer Office and the Science and Technology Park at UP.

What are your expectations for this initiative?
We aim to streamline the operations of research groups by accelerating data delivery and optimizing both data management and research infrastructure. Our response is driven by the internal needs of CATRIN as well as external challenges, such as the growing emphasis on open science.

How large is the team?
Currently, the group consists of 25 members, including lab technicians, technicians, scientists who were formerly responsible for major spectroscopic and microscopic instruments, and administrative staff. All of them have transitioned from the previous CATRIN-RCPTM research group.

How do you personally view this leadership role?
This is a significant challenge and career milestone for me. I see it as an opportunity to contribute to CATRIN’s growth, enhance its scientific output, and improve research efficiency. One of our first steps will be conducting a technical infrastructure analysis, as many of our instruments have been in operation for over a decade and require extensive maintenance. Beyond that, I hope to make improvements in commercializing research results and advancing data management practices.
